HYDERABAD: Two middle aged Hyderabadi women saved several lives including those of end stage kidney and liver failure patients and also helped blind persons get vision when their relatives donated their organs a day after they were declared brain dead on June 20.

Lakshmi Sulochana, a resident of Jillelaguda and A V Uma Devi of Attapur were admitted to two different private hospitals with similar symptoms including severe headache and vomiting. Despite attempts, they could not be saved and were incidentally declared brain dead on the same day on June 20.

Doctors said that in a rarity, both the families were well aware about organ donation. In fact, three years ago, when Lakshmi Sulochana’s son was diagnosed with end stage kidney failure, she had donated one of her kidneys for his transplantation and he is doing well now. Similarly, Uma Devi’s distant relative underwent kidney transplantation last year, and were well aware about the value of organs and the agony of patients waiting for an organ.

Relatives of both the women said that their mothers have always been full of sacrifices and would have liked their organs to be donated. Their organs including kidneys, liver, heart valves and eyes were retrieved and distributed to city hospitals on June 21.
